Benefits & Use Cases

This foundation is especially beneficial for individuals who want a sturdy, low-maintenance sleep surface without the bulk of a box spring. Its robust steel construction supports memory foam, hybrid, innerspring, and latex mattresses equally well, making it a versatile choice across various bedding types. The elevated design keeps bedding dry and dust-free while improving accessibility for makeup application, reading in bed, or simply stretching out comfortably.

For renters or apartment dwellers, the compact folding nature of the SmartBase makes it easy to transport and store when moving or rearranging furniture. Unlike traditional box springs that may shift or squeak over time, this single-piece platform maintains consistent support and operates silently—no creaks or wobbles. Many users appreciate how the recessed legs and smooth leg caps reduce noise on hard floors and prevent scuffs, contributing to a quieter, more comfortable bedroom environment.

Beyond its structural advantages, the foundation adds functional value through under-bed storage. With over a foot of vertical clearance, you can tuck away suitcases during travel seasons, organize extra towels and sheets, or keep infrequently used items neatly contained yet accessible. This helps maintain a tidy bedroom while maximizing floor space—a major benefit in smaller homes or studio apartments.

Important Notes

Customers consistently report that assembly is straightforward and requires no tools, thanks to the intuitive folding mechanism. The entire setup typically takes just minutes, and the frame locks securely into place without hardware or fasteners. Once assembled, the foundation remains stable and does not shift or bend under normal use, providing a flat, supportive surface that aligns perfectly with most standard mattress sizes.

While the SmartBase is praised for its quiet performance and lack of movement, users should note that due to its size and weight—especially in larger sizes like King or California King—it may require two people to move once fully assembled. Planning ahead when relocating or redecorating can help ensure a smooth transition.

The inclusion of a 5-year warranty underscores the manufacturer’s confidence in the product’s durability. While specific terms may vary slightly by region, the warranty generally covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal household use. Always review the full warranty details upon purchase to understand coverage limits and claim procedures.

Many buyers find the SmartBase to be an excellent value relative to its price point, particularly considering its heavy-duty build and added storage benefits. Customer feedback highlights its clean finish, solid construction, and hassle-free experience—from unboxing to daily use. Whether you’re furnishing a new home, upgrading an old bed frame, or seeking a reliable solution for guest rooms, this foundation delivers both strength and simplicity.

The “Big and Tall” 14 inch frame
Ok, I hope this review can help someone that was like me. There are a lot of reviews that are for the Zinus brand bed base but for different models. This review is for the Zinus 14 inch Elite Smart base “Big and Tall”. You can see each base model on the product description and compare them. With that being said, do not get it mixed with the 18 inch or other 14 inch models. This model is for the “Big and Tall” and it’s added feature is extra stability and weight limit of 4,000 lbs. Now, my wife and I are not big and tall at all, lol. We are actually not even close to that, but I wanted the extra stability in the frame after reviewing other customer reviews showing how the frame began to bend on them. Look at the product pictures and you will see that on the Big and Tall frame there are extra thick beams throughout the frame, whereas the other frames have more of a wire going throughout the inside. Other reviews have showed those wires bending on people. I didn’t want any chance of that happening, so I chose to go with the more thicker beamed framed. I’m glad I did because this frame is a tank solid. I’ve only had it for a couple of weeks now, but I am VERY – VERY PLEASED with my purchase. Time will tell if any squeaks will start, but right now absolutely quiet. No squeaks at all.Now the big topic everyone is concerned about, the storage space under the frame. This frame has at least 12 inch in height storage space. You might be able to squeeze a little more than that but you might have difficulty pulling out your container. I’ve included a photo with a 12 inch high tote under the frame. When I was in search of a base, I really wanted the 18 inch high Zinus frame, but I was concerned of the stability of the frame. From other reviews showing of the wired typed of frame has bent for others, I was also concerned with going 4 inches higher on the frame legs on 18 inch will make ghe frame less stable. I assume the higher you go, the less stable the legs are on the frame. I don’t know if that is true, but the 14 inch frame with the solid bars throughout is very stable and still comes with excellent space under the bed. You can go 12 inches high and be safe, and you have the entire rest of the bed space for storage. My wife put together the frame and mattress HERSELF while I was at work. I guess she couldn’t wait but she did an awesome job and it’s not difficult. My entire king size bed came in 2 boxes from Amazon. The frame and mattress. We are using a “Classic Brands 14 inch Cool Gel Memory Foam” king size mattress that we couldn’t be more pleased of. These two items together are a match made in heaven, lol. Although we will be putting some flat plywood between frame and mattress just to give more of a flat surface for the memory foam. I don’t know if it’s necessary because when I look under the bed, I don’t see any substantial sagging. It looks fine, but I just want to be safe.At the end of the day, the frame is awesome and a great idea. Very sturdy, quiet, easy to put together and easy to move around. I am very pleased with my purchase and I highly recommend it.

Great Bed Foundation – This is the Best Model
This is the perfect one to get. Get this one. You’ll see a lot of metal bed supports on Amazon, and you’ll be wondering which one to get. In general, I think these beds are great. They are economical, foldable (great for moving and storage options), and sturdy. You don’t have to buy a frame and box spring like you used to. Just buy a good mattress, and you are good to go.One drawback is that they aren’t usually designed so that you can attach a headboard to them, so this may limit your options.Another drawback is that it doesn’t seem they make this in California King sizes. This particular one may cost a little bit more than others, but I would suggest this one over the others.FYI – I use this frame with a Queen-sized Tuft & Needle memory foam mattress.(1) This bed was originally for a young child who weighs less than 50 pounds. So weight isn’t a really a consideration – it’s not about whether we think the bed will collapse. It’s about how supportive the bed feels during every day use. The Elite base with the more substantial metal bars (over the cheaper frames that have a thinner, more wiry look) provided more noticeable overall support.(2) We replaced our child’s bed – from this frame to a slatted wooden platform bed. In my opinion, the slats on the new bed did not provide the same support.(3) The recessed legs of this mattress foundation made it possible for us to simply place the frame right inside the wooden bed, over the slats. We didn’t have cut into the wood frame to make room, it was a perfect fit and super-easy. I thought about buying a box spring, but I was able to use this frame as a replacement instead, and the bed feels incredibly solid and sturdy. My cousin has an Ikea bed that she used for a few years, and two of the slats broke. I told her about this solution, and she ordered the same one. It worked perfectly for her, and she didn’t need to replace her bed. When shopping for a base, it’s good to make sure that the legs are recessed – i.e., they recede from the side edges. Some of the other frames have the middle leg placed all the way to the edge. This is fine when the foundation is used alone, but it would prevent it from being used as a support for wooden beds, like I was able to do with this one.In general, I thought this was a great purchase, and I would buy it again.

The box spring for our king mattress was getting a little old, and we have been finding problems with support. So we decided to try getting this frame before going out and buying a new mattress and box spring. My wife and I are very happy with the support offered by this platform, and we can now wait for a good mattress sale to replace the mattress if we so choose! When I received the king frame, I made the mistake of carrying it upstairs in its box (unbox it before carrying it up a flight of stairs, then you are moving two 30 lb pieces instead of one 60 lb piece). Assembly was fairly easy, getting some of the cross members in place was a bit hard just due to clearance from the sides, and determining how much the wingnuts had to be unscrewed to allow the cross member to be put in place was probably the most difficult part. The two halves are attached together with a pair of bolts, which have wingnuts on both ends. It is a little frustrating that the rivets holding a each piece together line up perfectly when attaching. Though this has little impact on putting the pieces together. I would say it took me less than 10 minutes to put the frame together. As for how quiet it is, we previously had another metal frame similar to this that was super squeaky, and it was very, very annoying. This though, this is very quiet. As in there is no sound coming from it after two weeks. The cross members at the fold flip out horizontally and are perpendicular to the frame, the cross members at the ends flip vertically and are at like a 45 degree angle. The way this is held together, I am pretty confident it should remain rather quiet.I also have not stubbed my toes on the legs, the distance they are recessed is pretty great!

This frame is perfect in every way. First, it comes in a compact box. It took like 15 mins to put together- very easy. It is easy to move around. My mattress sits perfectly on top. It is not squeaky at all, and is so sturdy. I also found that it made my mattress feel COMFIER to lay on than it did before (mattress was on the ground before). Lots of room for storage underneath. The parts are not sticking out like you’d find on the typical metal frames, so I have not bumped my toes/legs on it once. 10/10 would recommend.
