A strong magnetic screwdriver is a must
I was excited to swap out our current ceiling fans for something more modern that we can control remotely. The included instructions are generic so they don’t 100% coincide with this model. One difference is that the instructions talk about things like the reverse switch which this doesn’t have as it is 100% controlled by the remote (which doesn’t include batteries.) They include extra screws and parts like washers that don’t seem to be for this model either. There are also no bulbs included either which is kind of disappointing as it’s not like people normally keep E12 spares laying around like they would larger bulbs. Plus you’re paying a pretty penny for this. Installation is fairly straightforward, but you’ll run into headaches if you’re not using a screwdriver with a strong magnet. The smaller black screws with the claw washers that are installed along the side are a major pain to screw in, especially around the base since the cover holes don’t line up perfectly with the mount. This leads to the screws constantly either popping out or falling off when you’re trying to start them and when they do both the washer and screws go flying in separate directions. Since there are no spare black claw washers, your only option is to use the silver lock washers you lose them (I did.) The instructions also talk about wiring a blue wire (which is always for the lights,) but that is unnecessary here as those wires are all connected to the remote receiver using a quick disconnect system. The only wires you would be connecting are the ground, neutral and load wires back to the electrical junction box. The receiver has an included shelf where it sits alongside the mount instead of directly on top like it usually does. This removes the hassle in trying to make room for the receiver and gives the fan a lower profile which is nice. It also includes a balancing kit which I didn’t find necessary in my case as any wobbling from the blades was due to the screws connecting the mount to the electrical box weren’t tight enough (I had loosened them beforehand in-order to resolve the issue of the side holes on the cover not aligning.) Once everything is put together it is pretty slick looking. The blades themselves are reversible as they have different wood tones (light/dark) on each side. I opted for the darker tone. I’m not a fan of the pattern is they are horribly done. The grey (dark) side looks like it has tire tracks running up the middle of almost every blade. The remote works great. It is responsive, has green lights that tell you which speed the fan is set to and has great range. The tested range of the remote was ~35 feet for direct line of sight before it had response problems and ~30 feet through walls, doors, etc. before it wouldn’t work at all. You can also mute the beeps from the button presses. The fan moves a lot of air at max speed. Even in the Winter I almost immediately felt the temperature drop after it started going. There are some caveats though which is the shaking of the chandelier. Since the crystals aren’t secured tightly, the movement of the chandelier makes an annoyingly noticeable rattling sound. This could possibly be resolved if they used foam pads between the top and bottom of the crystals before installing them. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove the crystals and test this theory as the pins holding them in look to be glued on. The motor however is indeed silent.Overall it’s a great fan, but has a few inherent design problems. It also was missing one of the blade screws & didn’t include a spare (luckily I was able to just use one from the old fan.) All of these issues can be easily resolved with proper QA so hopefully they work on them.
