Product Overview

Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins is a landmark reference work that bridges centuries of textile heritage with contemporary scholarship. Designed for collectors, art historians, dealers, and serious enthusiasts, this comprehensive guide offers an unparalleled visual and linguistic framework for understanding the world’s most storied handwoven textiles. From ancient Persian carpets to vibrant Baluch tribal weavings and intricate Central Asian kilims, the book provides clear, precise definitions and contextual insights across regions spanning Morocco to China.

What sets this lexicon apart is its dual focus on historical depth and modern relevance. While rooted in classical academic research, it incorporates terminology actively used by weavers, traders, and appraisers today—making it not just a scholarly resource but a practical tool for real-world engagement in the rug market. The inclusion of understudied traditions—such as those from southwest Persia, Baluchistan, and Kurdistan—reflects recent shifts in art historical attention toward marginalized or overlooked weaving communities, offering readers access to emerging narratives in textile studies.

With over 1000 high-quality photographs, detailed diagrams, and annotated illustrations, the book transforms abstract concepts into tangible visual knowledge. Whether identifying a recurring geometric motif like the gul or distinguishing between wool, silk, and camel hair fibers, users gain confidence through clarity and precision. This makes it indispensable for authentication, valuation discussions, and deeper appreciation of cultural craftsmanship.

Key Features

  • Over 1,000 Illustrations: A rich collection of color photographs and technical drawings depicting motifs, knot types, border designs, and material textures from diverse regions. Each image is carefully selected to support accurate identification and comparative analysis.
  • Comprehensive Terminology System: Defines hundreds of terms related to construction (e.g., senneh, gut), ornamentation (e.g., elephant foot, star medallion), materials (e.g., kurk for goat hair), and regional styles (e.g., turkoman, seraband), many of which appear in both classical texts and current trade vernacular.
  • Geographically Diverse Coverage: Spans major centers of production including Turkey, Iran (Persia), the Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan), Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and China. Also includes select Scandinavian and Native American examples to illustrate cross-cultural influences and parallel design logic.
  • Integration of Classical and Contemporary Knowledge: Combines established scholarship with fieldwork-based language used by living practitioners and dealers, ensuring relevance across generations and markets.
  • Educational Design: Organized alphabetically and thematically for intuitive navigation. Cross-references connect related terms, while sidebars highlight key distinctions—such as differences between nomadic versus village weaving practices or urban versus rural dyeing techniques.

Benefits & Use Cases

This lexicon serves multiple audiences with tailored value propositions. For scholars and researchers, it offers a reliable, illustrated taxonomy that standardizes fragmented or inconsistent terminology found in older catalogs and auction records. It enables more precise citation and comparative study across cultures and periods. For collectors, it becomes a trusted companion during acquisition decisions—helping distinguish authentic antique pieces from modern reproductions by decoding subtle stylistic markers and provenance indicators embedded in design choices.

In the rug trade, professionals benefit from shared vocabulary when communicating with international clients, assessing condition reports, or negotiating consignments. The ability to quickly reference a term like “boteh” (paisley) or “shahabbasi” (royal court pattern) ensures clarity across linguistic barriers and enhances credibility with discerning buyers.

Moreover, the emphasis on previously underrepresented traditions—like Baluch or Kurdish tribal rugs—encourages ethical collecting practices and supports recognition of marginalized artisan communities. By illuminating their aesthetic contributions, the book fosters greater cultural respect and historical accuracy in how these works are displayed and interpreted in galleries, museums, and private collections.

The layout prioritizes usability: large-format images paired with concise definitions make complex information digestible without sacrificing academic rigor. Whether used at home, in the studio, or during appraisal meetings, this book functions as both a dictionary and a visual encyclopedia—a fusion rare in textile literature.

Important Notes

While exhaustive in scope, this volume does not serve as a diagnostic tool. It does not provide condition assessments, restoration recommendations, cleaning instructions, or current market price valuations. Authentication of individual pieces should always be conducted by certified experts using specialized equipment and provenance documentation.

Similarly, care guidelines for rug maintenance (e.g., vacuuming frequency, humidity control, pest prevention) are beyond the book’s intended purpose. Its sole function is descriptive: to clarify what rugs are, where they come from, how they were made, and what their symbolic or structural elements mean within their original cultural contexts.

Collectors and dealers are encouraged to pair this reference with site-specific guides, auction house reports, and conservation resources for holistic decision-making. However, for anyone seeking foundational knowledge in oriental rug studies—whether beginner or seasoned expert—this lexicon stands as an essential pillar of understanding.

If you love Asian design and want a deeper understanding of what you see, this is a volume you will treasure.
Generously illustrated compendium of information about the production, design, geography, and history of tapestry, primarily in the middle and far east. A few entries are brief; most are quite detailed and well-illustrated. It is likely the life’s work of the author, a devoted and diligent amateur collector, at one time president of the Chicago Oriental Rug Society. Stone has published several volumes on rug repair and maintenance and structure and design of tapestries from a wide range of countries. I also recommend the author’s “Tribal & Village Rugs: The Definitive Guide to Design, Pattern & Motif” which provides a detailed analysis of the designs of carpets. Filled with photos and extensive color diagrams illustrating details of every aspect of traditional carpet design “Tribal & Village Rugs” is an excellent source for collectors and designers. These two volumes are gems.

    Wonderful and thorough rug resource.
I own a lot of rug books, and several of Peter Stone’s past works. This is a culmination of past research, and is packaged in a way that any rug enthusiast, whether a novice or an expert, can expand their knowledge of textiles. The photos are amazing, and the layout of the different areas of focus truly make this an easy-to-use, and fun-to-use, reference book. This will now be at the top of my list to those clients of mine (rug cleaners and rug owners) as a book they must own, and I absolutely love that there is a Kindle version (finally!) of a great rug book. I truly appreciate Mr. Stone’s contributions to our industry, and especially this newest contribution.

The book is very well researched, but presents as a dictionary of Persian rug terminology in alphabetical order. I would have purchased a different book if I were looking comparatively at books in a bookstore or library. My error. The book arrived damaged.

    This is a DICTIONARY!
I give this beautiful book only three Stars hoping to call the attention of potential buyers to the word LEXICON in the full title. This book is a DICTIONARY and not to my mind suitable as an instructive text (unless you wish to learn by proceeding A to Z). I overlooked LEXICON in the full title. The illustrations are beautiful, but the full page ones are not identified underneath or on an adjacent page. The type font used is very fine and not easy to read against the heavy stock semi glossy paper. . .a bolder, darker font would have been a better choice, and there is plenty of room to have done so. When a word is looked up, the information given is very complete and well illustrated. A good reference work, but not suitable for those looking for an overview of the subject organized by region, time line or motif.

A very useful illustrated guide to motifs etc used in carpets and rugs that are not often found in other books. Therefore makes a great addition to any carpet collectors library. Book was delivered in great time, too.
