Product Overview
The Bosch PS31-2A 12V Max 3/8 Inch Drill/Driver Kit is engineered for professionals and dedicated DIYers who demand reliable performance without sacrificing portability. Designed to handle approximately 90% of common fastening and drilling tasks, this compact power tool delivers professional-grade results in a lightweight package. Weighing just 1.80 pounds, it’s significantly lighter than many corded or higher-voltage competitors, making it ideal for overhead work, electrical installations, and confined spaces where maneuverability is key. This kit comes complete with everything you need to get started: the drill/driver itself, two (2) 2 Ah lithium-ion batteries, and a fast charger. The inclusion of dual batteries means you can swap them mid-project without interruption, while the integrated fuel gauge lets you monitor remaining charge in real time—eliminating surprise shutdowns during critical jobs. Whether you’re an electrician running conduit behind drywall or a homeowner mounting shelves under cabinets, the Bosch PS31-2A offers the balance of power, efficiency, and convenience that makes daily use both comfortable and effective.
Key Features

Benefits & Use Cases
This drill excels in scenarios where space constraints and operator comfort are priorities. Electricians frequently rely on its compact size to navigate tight conduits and perform overhead installations, while plumbers appreciate the ability to reach behind walls or under countertops without switching to bulkier tools. General contractors value its reliability for light framing, trim work, and fixture mounting, knowing it won’t add strain during long job days.
For homeowners tackling weekend projects—such as assembling IKEA furniture, hanging curtain rods, or building small shelving units—the PS31-2A offers intuitive handling and consistent performance without the complexity of heavier models. Its variable speed dial allows users to fine-tune operation: use lower speeds (0–350 RPM) for controlled screw insertion in finished wood, or switch to higher speeds (up to 1,300 RPM) for quickly drilling pilot holes through soft materials.
The dual 2 Ah batteries ensure extended runtime between charges, and with the fast charger included, you’re back in action faster than with many competing kits. Real-time fuel gauge feedback adds peace of mind during multi-hour tasks, letting you track usage and plan recharging efficiently. Together, these features make the Bosch PS31-2A a practical, everyday solution for anyone who values portability without compromising on core functionality.
Important Notes
- The product comes with a complete kit containing the drill/driver, two (2) 2 Ah lithium-ion batteries, and a fast charger.
- Designed primarily for 90% of common household and light commercial tasks; not intended for heavy-duty industrial applications requiring high sustained torque or continuous high-load use.
- Compatible with Bosch 12V Max accessories and batteries, offering flexibility for future upgrades within the same platform—such as adding impact drivers, circular saws, or flashlights.
- No-load speed may vary depending on battery condition, ambient temperature, and usage intensity.

Best drill in this category/class, bar none, at any price.
Best drill for around the house, home improvement, honestly, I can’t think of anywhere this won’t get the job done except maybe a drilling through a thick piece of hardwood with a 3/4″ auger bit – it might though, I’ve never tried it.Charger charges the batteries from dead flat to 100% in about 30 minutes, and the batteries last forever. I got this for my GF’s Dad last year and he loves it. It absolutely SMOKES in every single category his old full sized Ryobi 18V drill – battery lasts WAY longer, it weights half as much, fits in your hand better, AND has more power.Small size means it can fit places other larger drills can’t, it fits my hand perfectly, and is extremely well balanced. Can’t say enough about this drill/driver; the only thing I can think of where you might not want it is for full on contractor duty but it might be just fine for that too, as I’m not a contractor. This kit I’m reviewing comes with two batteries so you’ll never be without power, no matter how much drilling/driving you’re doing.I’d love to find a con, but I can’t. It even looks cool. Don’t even bother with Ryobi, its crap – drop the extra cash and have this one for the next 10 years (while you had to buy 4 batteries for your Ryobi, @ $30 each), you’ll be glad you did.

Great battery life + weight + handling
We have had this drill for 18 months. While we don’t use it frequently, it still impresses me. For such a small unit, the batteries seem to last *much* longer than I’d expect, providing great, continuous power. It’s small enough that my wife of many years finds it comfortable, yet still feels good in my larger hands. Neither of us is as strong as we used to be, so this light unit was just right for us. The chuck-less tightening works well and securely. I also appreciate the task light that comes on when you use it.We really love the carry bag it comes in, to keep things together. We keep it in our camper for raising/lowering the stabilizers, as well as chores in the camper. I’m also impressed how infrequently I have to charge it while it stays in the camper between trips for months on end. Yet it always has a charge when we need it.

Great drill for little home projects.
This replaced a $30 drill from ikea that broke before I even had a chance to charge the battery. This is an amazing set with two replaceable batteries and much more powerful drill for just a little bit more!Iâve had it for around 6 months now, and moved into a new apartment and used to attach new handles on kitchen cabinets, swap out multiple light switches and fixtures, put together some flat pack furniture, install shelves in my wardrobe, put up roller shades for my windows and other small projects around the apartment.Itâs surprised me how often Iâve actually used it!The light is really useful for illuminating where youâre screwing, and I find it comfortable to hold.Iâve only used for very lightweight tasks (drilling/screwing into drywall, studs, and a couple times metal) but has met every task with ease. The carrying case has quite a lot of extra room. I use it to also store a small set of drill bits, a level, some pencils, and a manual screwdriver- and even with all that extra stuff it everything fits well.My only regret is buying the cheaper ikea drill in the first place and not buying this first off.

Love this drill
I purchased this drill to replace a similar Craftsman that I gave to my son. I like this one a lot more. It’s ergonomically better and seems robust. It was a great price, came with two batteries, charger and zipper case. I’ve already used it on many projects as a drill and a bit driver on deck screws. This was a great purchase, and I recommend it to anyone looking to buy a compact 3/8 cordless drill.

Love the design
Bosch hasn’t changed the design in many years, and why should they? It’s a perfect fit for my hand, and durable. A 1/2″ drill is unnecessary for many tasks. When 3/8″ is all you need, I think this is the ideal choice. Good looking, sturdy, and functional. I keep a heavy-duty 1/2″ deWalt in reserve; mostly I use three Bosch drills, one with a 3/16″ bit, one with a countersink, and one with a 3/32″ bit for pilot holes. One of the Bosch drills is at least 5 years old, with no signs of wear yet.

Name is misleading – Great drill, small and powerful, but the 2A in the “PS31-2A” does not mean 2Ah batteries. I wrongly assumed that I was getting 2Ah batteries. If you read all the fine print here and on the Bosch site, they never mention the size or the part # of the battery in this kit and I believe that it is really part of their marketing plan. The batteries that come with this kit are BAT411 which are only 1.34Ah. If you want the 2Ah battery, the part # for that battery is BAT414. I really can’t complain because I got a great drill at great price, but wanted to share my thoughts in case someone else is assuming the same as I did.Update – Confusing … Home depot have the same PS31-2A on their site which comes with one 2Ah battery and Canadian Tire also has same part number, PS31-2A which comes with two 2Ah batteries. I guess it depends who sells it. Just be aware of which battery you are getting.Update – Dec 2016, I was just cleaning out old boxes and just noticed that the box does indeed have a sticker that shows 2.0 Ah batteries included, so my fault, I should have looked at box more closely and I could have returned the drill before 30 days. Too late now, but just wanna share in case you get the 1.3 Ah batteries like I did. The kit I bought was “USED” here on Amazon and what I can assume is that the person who returned it probably kept the 2.0 ah batteries and returned 1.3 ah batteries from another kit. Since all looked complete and clean, the employees at Amazon never noticed the difference. I can only blame myself for not paying enough attention. Lesson learned!Update – I just contacted Amazon customer service and they solved my problem. Nobody else has the level of customer service that Amazon has.

This thing is unstoppable, it does it’s job very well considering its size, the battery life is quite good and isn’t a problem as long as you have the spare battery charging nearby. This drill definitely does not lack power and I’ve run into no problems in the past couple of years.

Ordered the drill from Amazon Prime as recommended by Amazon Australia. It came in a timely manner but is incompatible with Australian 240V power. The Amazon listing on the Australian website does not list its voltage requirements. The charger for the two 12V Lithium Ion batteries only works with 110V. It is not dual voltage. Disappointing. The return postage costs $66 with Australian Post. Amazon only covers $30 as a Prime Member. While it is costing me to return the item in terms of postage and hassle, I am still drillless. Amazon Australia needs to correct its website listing for this item. https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B003BEE2LU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
