Product Overview
The International Concepts Shaker Bookcase is a beautifully crafted, solid wood storage solution designed for those who value both strength and personalization. Standing at 36 inches tall with dimensions of 32″W x 12.3″D x 36″H, this unfinished parawood bookcase offers a versatile foundation for customizing your home decor. Whether you’re looking to create a cozy reading nook in the living room, organize books in a nursery, or add functional storage to a small apartment, this bookcase adapts seamlessly to your space and style. Made from high-quality solid parawood—a durable hardwood known for its stability and longevity—this piece supports heavy loads without sagging, making it ideal for books, collectibles, and decorative items alike.
What sets this bookcase apart is its unfinished surface, which invites customization. Unlike pre-finished furniture that limits your color and finish options, this bookcase serves as a blank canvas. You can paint it in bold, modern hues like navy blue or soft sage, stain it to achieve a rich walnut look, or leave it natural with a clear coat for an organic feel. The clean, minimalist Shaker-inspired design ensures it complements everything from farmhouse chic to contemporary interiors, adding timeless elegance wherever it’s placed. With three spacious shelves—including two fully adjustable ones—you have the flexibility to accommodate oversized art books, seasonal displays, or family photo albums.
Key Features
- Solid Parawood Construction: Built from premium solid parawood, this bookcase delivers exceptional durability and resistance to warping or cracking over time. Unlike particleboard or MDF alternatives, solid wood stands up to daily use, supporting heavy stacks of books or decorative objects with ease.
- Unfinished Finish for Full Customization: Delivered unfinished, this bookcase allows you to apply any paint, stain, or sealant to match your personal taste or existing room decor. This level of control is rare in mass-produced furniture and makes it easy to coordinate with seasonal changes or evolving interior themes.
- Three Generous Shelves with Adjustable Options: Includes three wide, flat shelves offering ample display and storage space. Two of the shelves are fully adjustable, allowing you to customize shelf height to fit items of varying sizes—from thin magazines to thick hardcovers or framed pictures.
- Compact Yet Functional Design: Measuring 32 inches wide by 12.3 inches deep, this bookcase fits comfortably in tight spaces such as under windows, beside couches, or in small bedrooms. Despite its modest footprint, it provides significant vertical storage, maximizing floor space without sacrificing style.
- Classic Shaker Styling: Featuring clean lines, simple trim, and a no-frills aesthetic, the Shaker design transcends trends. Its understated elegance works harmoniously in kitchens, dining rooms, home offices, nurseries, and libraries.
- Easy Assembly Included: Comes with all necessary hardware and step-by-step instructions, enabling most users to assemble it quickly and confidently using just a basic screwdriver. No professional help required.
- Versatile Placement Options: Suitable for indoor use in dry environments like pantries, laundry rooms, or closets—especially once sealed with protective finishes—making it adaptable beyond traditional living areas.

Benefits & Use Cases
This International Concepts Shaker Bookcase isn’t just another storage unit—it’s a flexible, long-lasting investment in both function and aesthetics. The solid parawood construction ensures structural integrity, preventing bowing or sagging even when fully loaded. Users appreciate how the sturdy build mimics the appearance and feel of custom-built cabinetry, yet comes at a fraction of the cost. The adjustable shelves make it especially practical for households with children, where toy bins, art supplies, and books of varying sizes need accommodating spacing.
Because it arrives unfinished, this bookcase empowers DIY enthusiasts to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece. Imagine transforming it into a soft white accent in a coastal-themed room or staining it to match rustic wooden beams in a cabin-style home. The ability to tailor every detail—color, sheen, texture—gives homeowners creative freedom rarely found in ready-made furniture.
Its compact size makes it ideal for small urban living spaces where every inch counts. Place it behind a sofa for extra book storage, tuck it under a staircase, or use it as a room divider in open-concept layouts. In nurseries, it can hold picture books, keepsakes, and changing accessories while adding warmth to the decor. In home offices, it organizes binders, notebooks, and tech gear without cluttering the desk.
Many customers note how straightforward assembly is, thanks to numbered parts and clear diagrams. Once assembled and finished, the bookcase feels substantial and well-crafted—often described as “surprisingly sturdy” for its size. The smooth, natural grain of parawood adds visual interest, especially when left unstained, offering a warm, authentic wood tone that ages gracefully.
Important Notes
- Assembly is required and includes all necessary hardware; only a basic screwdriver is needed to complete setup.
- The unfinished surface must be sealed with paint, stain, or polyurethane before regular use to protect the wood from moisture and wear.
- Always follow manufacturer guidelines when applying finishes to ensure proper adhesion and avoid damage to the material.
- While designed primarily for indoor use, it can be used in dry, enclosed spaces like pantries or mudrooms once properly sealed and protected.
- Customers are encouraged to test finish compatibility on a small area first, especially if using oil-based paints or stains.

I LOVE IT!!!!
I would buy this again and may do so in the near future. I got the unfinished bookshelf, and it is absolutely beautiful! It is solid wood and very sturdy. The bookshelf was very easy to put together, however, like what some of the other’s said in their reviews, the back took a little more work. They provide screws to attach the thin plywood to the back, but the wood is so hard and dense that you really need to drill little holes in it first. Doing that, made it go fast and easy! I just love it! Well worth the money spent! Oh, I was going to paint or stain it, but I haven’t done anything just yet, because it’s so pretty as is!

Better than Ikea
Best bookshelf on Amazon. A beginner-friendly build since I didnât need any instructions. The natural wood is very thick and able to hold the weight of my birdâs perch and more. Iâm really impressed with the quality because itâs strong and the color is perfect.

Worth The Money
This is a cleverly designed, solid wood bookcase that is well worth the money, especially when you compare it to fully-assembled bookcases of alder or pine from your local “nude” furniture outlets. The weak point in bookcases that require assembly has always been the back of the unit, and the use of flimsy, thin particle board or wood veneers that have a strong tendency to warp. I totally avoided this issue by not installing ANY of the backing whatsoever. My reasoning is that when I fill the shelves with books, you can’t even SEE the back of the bookcase! It sure made the assembly a lot easier, and there is no structural integrity provided by the veneer backing. BTW, the parawood is quite handsome and has a very pleasant wood aroma. P.S. – I forgot to add that when I unpacked the box containing all the wood pieces, I was very upset to see that there were NO hardware items (screws, bolts, etc.) enclosed! After going online to Amazon to see if I could have someone send me the needed hardware, and never finding ANY link to International Concepts, and after going through all the box contents with a fine-tooth comb, I finally see a red nylon cord taped to the OUTSIDE of the shipping box attached to a small plastic bag containing, you guessed it, all the needed hardware!. Why on earth IC would ship the hardware on the OUTSIDE of the box attached by a nylon cord, I have NO clue!

Good for the price
The off gassing is fairly strong. Wondering how long it will take to dissipate. Some of the holes arenât predrilled. But overall great for the price. Sturdy and easy to modify so it looks like a custom built in.

Very nice parawood table, they’ve made the 3 panel back 1 panel and ours will look great when the finishing is completed.
17 years ago I bought 4 chairs, an end table and a phone table from Lowe’s made our of Parawood. We finished them with Minwax Wipe On Poly and we’re still using them to this day. They’ve held up very nearly as well as our oak bedroom suite. Unfortunately, Lowe’s quit carrying them shortly after our purchase and we just bought the shortest bookcase from Amazon ourselves. The book case was as easy to assemble as the furniture from 17 years ago and just as nice. A couple comments that should be worthwhile to the newest purchasers: 1. These are not perfect and have a few defects. They’re made of wood and are handmade for the most part. Also, while they’ve been sanded, they do have some glue spots you will need to sand out with some 150 to 180 grit sandpaper BEFORE finishing, as these spots will not take finish. This is not an arduous task, but does take some patience, so if you’re looking to assemble and throw some finish on, you may be disappointed. 3. I completed assembly of our shelving unit two days ago, so I have a recent unit. They now come with the back as a single, solid piece though you still have to use a drill to provide screw holes for the backing support brackets. Again, not that hard to do. 4. Finally, these are for “do it yourselfer’s” and I’d rate them at the 2 to 3 difficulty level. Not that hard, just take a little patience. Remember, they are wood, they are solid and they have natural wood’s natural flaws, part of what makes them interesting in my book. Just take your time, correct the minor flaws, handle the quirks and be patient with the sanding and finishing – you’ll be glad you did. Don’t forget that there’s a lot of information on the web, make use of that if you need when refinishing these.

Perfect!
Sick and tired of press-board furniture, I wanted real wood bookshelves. These caught my attention for simple grace, price and solid appearance. I read the reviews and wasn’t deterred by the minor complaints – I can find a hardware store if a wall bracket is missing! I was concerned about the packaging problems that seemed to be common but I could refuse them if they appeared to be damaged.I ordered 3 and they arrived in 2 separate shipments. One box was split open at the tape and the bottom badly dented, one was open but otherwise undamaged and the third was fine. Happily, the inside package was well placed and secure so the shelves were fine. All parts and pieces were there and in excellent condition. I had no problems with assembly but I would advise paying careful attention to the illustrations. The book shelf is meant to be assembled upside-down! To ensure easy installation of the back panels just keep an eye on the slide spacing as you are tightening bolts. The reinforcement straps applied behind the shelf really add a lot of stability to the ‘flimsy’ back panels. The side walls are not a single board but a well-laminated panel of small boards. If painting, you’ll never know; if staining, they will present a somewhat checker-board design which I like but you might not. Still, solid wood not veneer. The individual shelves are very solid and single piece boards. The hardware is well placed, lines up and is heavy duty.I am delighted with all 3 and will buy more from this supplier. I have no complaints about the shelves but stronger tape on the shipping box would be recommended. Price? Worth every penny!
