Product Overview

Rugs to Riches: An Insider’s Guide to Buying Oriental Rugs, Revised & Updated Edition is a must-read for anyone serious about understanding and investing in authentic handmade oriental rugs. Authored by Caroline Bosly—a globally respected rug broker with decades of field experience—this practical guide transforms what can seem like an intimidating niche market into a clear, actionable process. Whether you’re a first-time buyer looking to avoid costly mistakes or a seasoned collector aiming to refine your appraisal and negotiation skills, this book offers essential knowledge grounded in real-world practice. From identifying genuine hand-knotted craftsmanship to evaluating condition, pricing, and resale potential, the book strips away industry jargon and provides readers with the tools to make informed decisions across any buying environment—from local dealers to international auctions.

Key Features

  • Expert guidance from a top-tier rug broker: Caroline Bosly brings over 25 years of hands-on experience sourcing, appraising, and brokering high-quality oriental rugs worldwide. Her insider perspective reveals patterns, pitfalls, and opportunities that aren’t available in generic guides or online listings.
  • Precise identification methods: Learn how to distinguish between authentic handwoven rugs and machine-made imitations. The book explains subtle visual and tactile cues—such as knot density, warp-and-weft structure, and dye consistency—that indicate true craftsmanship versus modern reproductions.
  • A simple yet effective condition scoring system: Instead of relying on vague descriptions like “excellent” or “fair,” Bosly introduces a point-based grading method that evaluates wear, repairs, color fading, and structural integrity. This objective framework helps buyers quickly assess whether a listed price aligns with actual value.
  • Proven strategies for negotiating smarter deals: Whether shopping at a brick-and-mortar shop, browsing online marketplaces, or attending estate sales, the book outlines step-by-step tactics for initiating conversations, recognizing markup levels, and confidently lowering prices without damaging relationships.
  • Insider advice on selling for maximum profit: Beyond buying well, the book covers when and how to sell—whether through private collectors, specialty auction houses, or consignment galleries. Tips include timing your sale based on market cycles, preparing rugs for appraisal photos, and setting realistic expectations.
  • Styling and preservation best practices: Discover how to thoughtfully incorporate oriental rugs into home decor—considering room function, traffic flow, and aesthetic harmony—while also learning proper cleaning techniques, rotation schedules, and storage methods to preserve both beauty and investment value.

Benefits & Use Cases

This comprehensive manual serves as both an educational primer and a long-term reference tool for diverse audiences. Newcomers gain confidence through Bosly’s accessible writing style, which demystifies complex topics like tribal origins, weaving techniques, and regional characteristics. Intermediate buyers appreciate the detailed breakdowns of common mislabelings and value drivers such as age, size, and rarity. Professional appraisers, interior designers, and estate liquidators will find the condition-scoring model especially useful for client consultations. Additionally, the inclusion of care guidelines ensures that even the most beautiful rugs remain vibrant and structurally sound for generations—protecting not just their appearance but also their financial worth. Ideal for gift-givers seeking meaningful, educational presents or students pursuing careers in textile arts, antiques, or cultural heritage.

Important Notes

While many principles in Rugs to Riches—particularly those related to fundamental craftsmanship standards and basic valuation logic—remain timeless and applicable today, the publishing date (May 1985) means some market dynamics, authentication technologies, or digital platforms referenced may no longer reflect current realities. Readers are strongly encouraged to cross-reference information with up-to-date sources when dealing with rare, high-value, or historically significant pieces. Always obtain independent verification from certified appraisers or conservators before committing to purchases or sales involving large sums or irreplaceable textiles.

The Best Guide You Will Find
By far the best guide to oriental rugs, out of the 4 I have read. Very specific, practical, comprehensive information. The explanations are clear and spot-on. The section on bargaining is priceless. Even though it was published 30 years ago and the dollar numbers are outdated, that is unimportant compared to the value of this highly-qualified insider’s knowledge. It is very nicely written, too.

Everything I needed to know about Oriental Rugs
I wanted this book because I was passed down an oriental rug and wasn’t sure what it was worth or how to appreciate why it was rumored worth that much. I would totally have this be my hobby now because this book was so interesting. If only I had more space to put rugs! This book told me everything I needed to know about Oriental Rugs and where my rug is from. I even understand the patterns now, what the colors mean, and how to maintain it. I estimated my rug’s worth using the guide at the end of the book and without telling the expert my estimate, theirs was only about 20% off of mine! This book was really useful and I’ll probably keep it as long as I keep the rug.

    Worth its weight in gold
Incredibly thorough book. I bought a second one as the first one is starting to loose pages. This has been a great asset to my education on oriental rugs.

Excellent and comprehensive guide to Oriental rugs
While I own a few rugs from a previous trip to the Middle East courtesy of Uncle Sam, I wanted to better educate myself to place myself into a better bargaining position with the local merchants. I believe this book is an excellent resource and explains a great deal about the history, workmanship, and variety of Oriental carpets, but it also includes tips on how to shop (including haggling), how to pick rugs based on your home, and cleaning and care recommendations. The only downside is the age of the commentary since the market has changed, at least from what I see, since this book was written. Nevertheless, it is a great introduction to the fascinating and beautiful world of Oriental rugs.

Great reference book for the novice
For someone who wants to learn how to purchase and recognize a high quality rug, this is a must for beginners. There are so many rugs out there that are outrageously priced yet there are characteristics from the book that you can learn to distinguish them from machine woven ones from China with wool imported from New Zealand.

Chapter on “profit sharing” worth the price of entry.
Interesting book. Chapter on “profit sharing” worth the price of entry. Tells you how to negotiate the price of a rug. I have never seen anyone else even approach this topic in this way. Rest of the book pretty basic but certainly worth the $4.25 it will cost you including shipping.
