Product Overview

The Genesis GD38B 3/8″ Variable Speed Reversible Corded Drill is a practical, no-frills power tool built for everyday home improvement and light-duty repair tasks. Powered by a robust 4.2 Amp motor, it delivers consistent torque across a wide range of speeds—from delicate precision work to deeper drilling in soft materials like wood and plastic. With its variable speed control up to 3,000 RPM and reversible functionality, this drill adapts to both driving screws and removing stuck bits with ease. The 3/8-inch keyless chuck allows for quick, tool-free bit changes, making setup fast and efficient for users who value convenience during projects. Designed for occasional use, the GD38B strikes a balance between affordability and essential performance, ideal for DIYers, renters, or homeowners needing reliable corded power without the complexity of brushless motors or advanced features.

Key Features

  • 4.2 Amp Motor: Delivers dependable power for drilling into wood, light metal, and plastics, performing effectively at both low and full operating speeds without stalling.
  • Variable Speed Control (0–3,000 RPM): Offers smooth adjustment from slow, controlled driving to faster drilling speeds, giving users greater control over their work and reducing the risk of damaging delicate materials.
  • Reversible Function: Enables forward and reverse rotation, allowing you to back out stripped screws or remove jammed bits quickly—ideal for tight spaces or tricky fastening jobs.
  • 3/8-Inch Keyless Chuck: Makes changing bits simple and hands-free; just squeeze the chuck jaws while inserting or removing a bit, then tighten to secure it in place.
  • Lock-On Button: Engages the trigger for continuous operation, eliminating the need to hold the trigger down during extended use—great for long screw runs or repetitive drilling.
  • Belt Clip Included: Attaches securely to your belt or tool bag, offering convenient, hands-free carrying when the drill isn’t actively in use.

Benefits & Use Cases

This drill excels in typical residential environments where reliability and simplicity are more important than heavy-duty industrial capability. It’s well-suited for common household tasks such as installing curtain rods, assembling flat-pack furniture, hanging shelves, mounting wall art, or working on small woodworking projects. The variable speed dial lets you match the RPM to the material—low speeds for driving screws gently into drywall or hardwood, higher speeds for boring through softer woods or plastics. The reversible function adds real utility when tackling tight corners or stripping fasteners that can’t be removed straight out. Its compact, ergonomic design reduces hand fatigue during moderate-duration use, and the included belt clip keeps the tool accessible but out of the way when not needed. While it lacks the impact function of hammer drills or the torque of larger cordless models, the GD38B performs consistently within its intended scope—perfect for users who don’t require professional-grade performance but want a dependable, plug-in solution for routine maintenance and light construction.

Important Notes

Based on user feedback, the Genesis GD38B is best classified as an economy-grade drill suitable for light to medium-duty applications rather than continuous professional use. Some customers report concerns about long-term durability, including wobbly chucks, loose switches, and fragile plastic housings after repeated stress or heavy usage. These issues typically arise when the tool is pushed beyond its recommended limits or used in demanding conditions like drilling into dense hardwoods or hardened steel without pilot holes. For optimal performance and longevity, avoid forcing the chuck beyond its grip or applying excessive downward pressure. Periodically check the chuck jaws and internal mechanisms to ensure they remain snug and aligned. The package includes only the drill unit and belt clip—no batteries, chargers, additional bits, or carrying case are provided. As a corded model, it requires access to a standard electrical outlet and offers limited mobility compared to wireless alternatives. Always use appropriate pilot holes and cutting lubricants when working with metals to prevent binding and extend tool life.

    Extra High Speed Drill
The very high rpm (3000) is very useful in drilling through hard surfaces. Old electrical boxes are hard to drill through for the green ground but the high speed really helps to provide the heat to break through.

Easy to use, steady and easy bit change
I LOVE this drill. It’s my 1st one ever. I had to watch a 30 second video on how to use the chuck but after that, it’s home free!! I used it for flat head, phillip and hex screws on DIY projects. It’s perfect. Now the drill bits I ordered that were rubber on the outside stripped down in no time flat!! Get steel or other type of metal bits. This drill works well.Oh, if you find that the chuck stopped spinning, it may be because the bit got too hot. If you pause for 3 secs and start back drilling, it will too. Have fun!!!!

    Good Value
This drill is lightweight, and works as expected. I bought this to replace an old cordless drill that would never stay charged, or charge properly because I don’t use it often enough. I decided that because I have need for a drill only 2 or 3 times a year, and I can’t safely handle a heavy cordless drill anymore, that a corded drill might be the ticket. It’s lightweight, and plenty powerful…perfect for this 66 year old grandma!

    Not for delicate drill work.
The adjustable speed doesn’t work for very slow speeds. It sorta skips and goes straight to medium speed. Little disturbing when I tried using this drill with small drill bits.It does work well from medium speed to full speed. It had a burning smell for a few seconds during its very first use, but goes away quickly. Probably manufacturing oil from when it was built and for long storage until purchased and used.It did (almost) everything I bought it for. This drill is cheap but feels good in my hands. It should be good enough until I buy a high quality permanent drill.I only gave it three stars because of the switch.

    Poorly manufactured
Parts came off while drilling. Another part was not affixed correctly when received and I couldn’t fix it. Poor quality. Also blows a lot of air while in use.

    very happy
It don’t pay to buy a high priced 1. I have a 1/2 and a 3/8 but use 3/8 the most. There are many things that can go wrong. The last 1 the chuck seased up. checked on replacing but the cost and pain to replace easier to get a new drill.
