A Great Work Surface On Top Of A Granite Countertop
When we moved from our “mid-century modern” apartment, where we had lived for over 50 years, with its stainless steel kitchen countertops to a brand new retirement cottage, the granite countertops in the new kitchen were driving me crazy. I have always admired the maxim coined by the great architect Louis Sullivan and promoted by his protege Frank Lloyd Wright and others that “form follows function.” To me, granite countertops were an example rather of “form follows fashion.” Granite is very pretty, so if you plan to have an open kitchen and want your guests to admire its beauty, it may be a good choice. But if your goal is to have a kitchen best suited for actually preparing food, stainless steel seems to be a far better choice.Stainless steel is installed with upward curved edges so that liquids don’t run off the edges, and the area around the sink is slightly sloped so that those liquids run down into the drain. It is essentially impervious to anything you put on it, so without a yearly sealing, it will not be stained by fruit juices (or, as we discovered, by the dyes in dish-washing liquid that immediately stained the granite after it leaked from a container and sat unnoticed on the countertop for a week or so.)We could not replace the granite countertops, and we would be preparing our own meals because we did not (at our preference) have a “food plan” at this retirement community. So, to preserve my sanity, I went looking for a hack that would provide on top of the granite the kind of usable work area to which I was accustomed with stainless steel. After an extensive Web search, that revealed nothing designed for the purpose, this mat seemed like a good possibility. It would provide the raised edges to contain liquids during food prep. Its surface would withstand the heat from a saucepan taken from the stove or a glass cooking bowl from the microwave. It could be easily washed down, with the water running off the edge into the sink, and wiped dry. (I thought that I would need to trim the edge at the sink to let liquids run off, but it turned out that it could be easily bent down.)My wife was not enthusiastic about this latest crazy idea of mine. “You are going to put WHAT? A thing that was made to go UNDER a sink? On top of my beautiful countertop?” But she quickly became an admirer of it. As you can see in the accompanying photo, it looks quite attractive. The only concession that I needed to make was to agree that the mat would be used to prepare dinner and left in place overnight for breakfast prep, then removed so that it would not obscure the beautiful countertop during the day. (Our lunches require very little kitchen work.) And although the mat is of a generous size, it can easily be removed and stored for the day on top of the washing machine in the adjoining utility room.

Sturdy. Easy to clean. Perfect fit
I ordered two of these for my two kitchen sink cabinets. They’re perfectly fitted to the sink base. They’re easy to wipe clean. Catch any spills – especially for me I keep vinegar, oil and syrup under there to alleviate that mess inside the cabinets. These mats have a lip on them so if something does spill it will catch it. And with a diverse color choice. My cabinets are dark BM wrought iron, so the dark grey slate matches perfect. You don’t even notice it. 5/5 – I highly recommend

    Basin Under-sink Mat
This is very easy to install. It is easy to make necessary cuts for pipes. You can cut with scissors. The mat is plenty thick and pliable; making it very durable. I wanted a smooth surface because it is easier to clean and this mat is smooth. As you can see in the pictures it is a great fit 22”x28”. I’m 77 years old and I installed this mat; very simple. I like that the edges turn up just in case I have a leak.Every under the sink cabinet needs one of these. I recommend this product.

    It’s super!
Have had this a few months now and am very happy with it. Size was perfect, just as described. It’s thick and sturdy, I have a heavy RO tank sitting on it with no problems. Keeps the undersink cabinet dry and more organized since I could get rid of several plastic containers that I used to hold cleaning supplies. I just wish this brand came in a smaller size for my bathroom cabinet. Good value.
