Work in progress, mostly great
It needs better instructions, but it works great once you figure it out and install it properly.The tiny screws go inside the battery compartment to hold it to the inside metal frame. The longer screw goes in the bottom and into the inside metal frame. It’s a little difficult to do, and I’m very concerned that some people will strip the threads on the screws, as they’re hard to get started. You have to push and hold the inside lock frame into the rubber while you get the screws started, or they won’t grip.This could be designed better. But once those screws are in and tightened, it feels solid enough.I had difficulty getting the Tuya app to install the lock. It would find it right off, but I kept getting an error when it went to install. I eventually found that if I turned on “Legacy Mode” in the troubleshooting section of my Eero app, the install would proceed.I also scrapped the Tuya app altogether and used the Smart Life app instead, which is basically the same thing. I already had most of my smart lights, etc on the Smart Life app, so it was easier.Even though Tuya and Smart Life integrate with Amazon Alexa, the door lock isn’t ready for it. I was told by customer service that they were still working on Alexa integration.The fingerprint, numeric code and app unlock features all work very well. We gave each of our kids a numeric code to use, and the Smart Life app tracks who unlocks the door when. Nice. You can also use routines, called “scenes” in Smart Life, to turn on the auto-lock feature overnight, and off again in the morning. If you just leave this feature on it’s a pain, as the door will automatically lock back up each time you unlock it.Remote unlock through the app works fine, you can unlock it from anywhere as long as you have data on your phone.The outdoor keypad lights up so you can see it at night, which is a great feature. There’s also a USB-C port at the bottom that you can plug a powerbank into in case the batteries in the unit get too low to operate the lock, which is another great feature.The voice instruction is clear, and somewhat helpful. There are quite a few steps to manually turn features on and off, or to add codes, and it can be a bit confusing.but it’s do-able. Better instructions written by a native Engish speaker would be extremely helpful here.All in all I’m very happy with the lock. It feels secure, functions well, and looks nice. If it were easier to install with a better screw design, had better instructions, had updated wifi protocols, and Alexa integration I would have given it five stars.
