Key Features

  • Convenient Keyless Entry: No more searching for keys or carrying keychains. The light-up keypad illuminates as you approach, allowing you to enter your personalized code and unlock your door instantly. This feature is especially helpful during rainstorms, heavy bags, or when children are holding hands.
  • Grade 2 BHMA Certified Security: As a Grade 2 certified lock, the SmartCode 260 meets strict industry standards for strength, durability, and finish. It’s built to withstand physical attacks and environmental stressors, offering up to 2.5 times greater resistance than lower-grade Grade 3 locks commonly found in homes.
  • Auto-Lock Functionality: Enhance daily security by setting the lock to engage automatically after a delay you choose—30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. This prevents accidental left-open doors and ensures your home remains protected even if you forget to manually lock up.
  • Long-Lasting Battery Performance: Operated by four AA alkaline batteries, the lock delivers at least 12 months of continuous use under normal conditions. Low-battery alerts help you stay ahead of replacements, minimizing unexpected lockouts due to dead power.
  • Flexible Code Management: Create up to 50 unique user codes, including 10 one-time codes ideal for temporary access such as houseguests, delivery personnel, or repair technicians. One master programming code allows full control over editing, deleting, or adding new users—no app or hub required.
  • Simple DIY Installation: Designed for quick setup, installation requires only a standard screwdriver. Clear instructions guide you through aligning the strike plate, securing the latch mechanism, and programming your initial code—no special tools or expertise needed.

Benefits & Use Cases

The Kwikset SmartCode 260 excels in real-world scenarios where both security and ease of use matter. For busy families, it eliminates the frustration of lost keys and forgotten access cards. Parents can assign individual codes to babysitters or older children, granting entry without physical keys—ideal for after-school routines or weekend visits. Homeowners hosting Airbnb guests or frequent visitors benefit from time-limited one-time codes that expire automatically, reducing the risk of unauthorized access later.

Service professionals like plumbers, electricians, or cleaning staff can receive temporary codes delivered via text or email, streamlining access without leaving permanent traces. During holidays or parties, multiple guests can enter independently using their own codes, enhancing convenience while maintaining oversight. The auto-lock function is particularly valuable in homes where routine changes—such as working late shifts or walking pets—might otherwise lead to unintentionally unlocked doors.

Durability ensures consistent performance year-round, whether installed in humid coastal areas or dry inland climates. The solid construction resists scratches, corrosion, and minor impacts, preserving both appearance and functionality. With minimal maintenance and intuitive controls, the SmartCode 260 supports seamless integration into daily life without added complexity.

Important Notes

This product does not include batteries—users must purchase four AA alkaline batteries separately before installation. While installation is simple, proper alignment between the deadbolt and strike plate is critical for smooth operation; misalignment may cause binding or failure to latch. Follow the provided step-by-step guide carefully during setup and programming to avoid errors.

The lock supports rekeying, allowing future changes to internal cylinder settings if desired. However, once codes are programmed, accessing the programming mode requires the master code—so keep it secure and memorable. Exposure to extreme moisture (like direct water spray) or temperature swings beyond typical indoor/outdoor ranges may affect electronic components over time.

After installation, test the auto-lock feature multiple times to confirm the selected delay matches your lifestyle needs. If the lock displays a low-battery warning or fails to respond, replace the batteries promptly. Always verify that the deadbolt fully extends and retracts before relying on its security function.

Perfect! Easy to install and use!
Bought this to swap with our legacy deadbolt. Directions are easy to follow making it easy to install and setup, and it fit the existing hole. The ability re-key the lock to our current key was super easy as well. Perhaps a little more pricey than I expected but worth it in the end for the ease of use. Overall the lock looks and works great, and makes getting in/out of the house easier. Overall this purchase was well worth it.

A High-Quality Secure Lock With Bad Written but Good YouTube Installation [except…]
Overall, a real value for the buck. Easy to install. I did three. It took 15-20 minutes for the first one—mostly reading instructions and watching KwickSet’s Iinstall video over coffee—and around 5 minutes for the others. Good looking, at once updating my 1920s bungalow while blending into the vintage esthetic. Smooth operation. And secure.Five stars, but I’m tempted to shave-off a star for poor instructions regarding re-handing a lock. See below for details.Re: security. Most equivalently-priced deadbolts at my hardware and big-box stores were less secure, rated as ANSI level. These Kwickset SmartCode 260 locks are locksmith-worthy ANSI level 2 locks. Finding Level 2 locks in the big-box was a bit of a joke, though, since no worker had a clue. Though I found a Schlange whose packaging declared “Level 2” for $200. My local hardware store was more helpful and had a similar level 2… but on sale for $130 ($170 regular price).* INSTALL NOTE. Watch Kwickset’s YouTube install video. It takes but a minute since the written instructions were tough to follow with printing too small for my late-50’s eyes.HOWEVER… There is no description of re-handing the lock if you need to, be try not to power-up the lock before it is installed since it automatically determines hand. And changing hands it NOT discussed.I learned this the hard way with my third and final install. The last lock was the one I’d been messing around with as I followed the install video, resetting entry codes, etc. with batteries in. I installed it physically without a hitch, but it was electronically wrong-handed, meaning that hitting “lock” unlocked it.Since the other two I’d installed earlier handed themselves automatically, I was at a loss. Since re-handing was not covered in the manual or videos for this model, I thought I had a defective unit. I called, but Kwikset was closed for Thanksgiving. Not one to give up I installed and re-installed it four times, following along with the YouTube install video for the final two. The result was always the same.So my initial five-minute install grew to over 90 minutes.Frustrating! And then, after giving up and re-installing the old deadbolt, I noticed “reset” and “change hand” codes in fine print, hidden in a chart showing “How To Program The Lock” while eating dinner. So after dishes, I took out the old manual bolt… AGAIN!… reinstalled the final electronic deadbolt… FOR THE FIFTH TIME!… and entered the “factory reset” code. And Finally, the thing worked, automatically handing itself when I entered the set-up sequence.A lot of frustration could have been avoided if handing had been covered since I know I’m not the only person this is going to happen to.Still, since this was my fault, I’m not taking off on the review since I’m well aware that I’m a sort of “Ready…. Fire…. Aim” sort of guy.

Easy to program and love the auto lock. A joy for rentals no keys to wag around
Used on rental property as well as my home. One use code comes in handy for maintenance projects. No keys to keep up with. Safer for renters just change and delete codes when they move.

    Looks nice on the door
I installed this lockset to replace a standard deadbolt. The depth adjustment is just two ways and I unfortunately fell in between so it doesn’t sit straight on the outside. Other than that, it set up nicely to put in codes and works great right now

    Works well so far
I have Kwikset locksets, but this was my first with the smart rekey feature. This was long overdue, in the past I rekeyed the locks myself. It was not difficult but required a set of pins and tools. The smart rekey feature is simple and easy enough for most anyone. I rekeyed the new lockset in under five minutes. I installed it in place of an existing deadbolt, and it toook less than 30 minutes. Programming was a bit erratic, and I had to perform the factory reset a few times, but finally got it programmed. So far it works well. The plunger has to be installed without any binding or the lock will not open easily. Once positioned correctly, the lock worked nicely.

    Defective
Had professionally installed. After he left, I tried to enter an additional code. That’s when everything stopped working as normal. The keypad lights stayed on and now the it locks and unlocks by just touching the lock key. no code required. Tried resetting, but to no avail. It still opened and locked without a code. Got onto Kwikset help chat, but they couldn’t help, so I was transferred to tech support. But before I could receive their call, I had to pay $5, which it said I would be refunded after I was helped. Well he called, but my phone said it was a junk call and didn’t ring, so I missed the call. Tried calling back, but no answer. The tech then said on the chat app to reset the pad and start over, which I had done several times before. That’s when I gave up and decided to return the lock. the next day I found that they charged me another $49 for the call. What poor tech support, that you have to pay to get any help, which really wasn’t any help at all. Bad experience all around.
