Product Overview

The SKIL 6.2 Amp 10-Inch Benchtop Drill Press (model DP9505-00) is engineered for woodworkers and DIY enthusiasts who demand greater precision, repeatability, and control than handheld drills can offer. With a powerful induction motor, integrated laser alignment system, and five-speed operation, this benchtop tool delivers consistent performance for a wide range of materials—from softwoods to harder substrates like plywood or light metal. The built-in Class II laser projects a visible dot onto the workpiece, eliminating guesswork and ensuring accurate hole placement before drilling begins. Adjustable depth stop and table height settings further enhance precision, making it ideal for tasks requiring uniformity across multiple holes. While praised for its straightforward assembly and reliable functionality on typical home workshop projects, some users have noted concerns about operational wobble and perceived limitations in build rigidity. Despite these considerations, the DP9505-00 remains a practical solution for those seeking a compact, feature-rich drill press without stepping into heavier industrial models.

Key Features

  • 6.2 Amp Induction Motor: Delivers sustained power output to maintain speed and torque when drilling through various materials, reducing the risk of stalling during demanding applications such as deep mortising or dense hardwoods.
  • Laser Alignment System: Includes a Class II laser with a maximum average radiant power of 0.83mW that projects a precise red dot onto the material surface. This real-time visual guide allows users to verify hole location prior to drilling, significantly improving accuracy—especially useful for repetitive or alignment-critical work like dowel joinery or mounting hardware.
  • Five-Speed Operation: Offers five selectable speeds ranging from 610 to 2,800 RPM, enabling optimal bit performance across different materials. Lower speeds suit softer woods and delicate operations, while higher speeds handle tougher jobs like drilling steel or stainless tubing without excessive heat buildup.
  • Adjustable Depth Stop: Provides fine control over drilling depth by allowing the spindle to be preset to a specific distance from the table. This ensures consistent hole depths across batches of parts, reducing errors and protecting both the material and bit from over-drilling.
  • Adjustable Table Height: The worktable can be raised or lowered to accommodate taller workpieces or improve ergonomics during use. Combined with the ability to tilt slightly (if supported by design), this feature increases versatility for angled or vertical drilling tasks.
  • Integrated Work Light: Though not detailed in specifications, the inclusion of a work light—as implied in the product title—enhances visibility in dimly lit workshops, contributing to safer and more accurate operations.
  • User-Friendly Assembly: Comes with clear, step-by-step instructions that simplify setup, making it accessible even for those with limited mechanical experience. Most customers report completing assembly within 30–60 minutes using basic tools.

Benefits & Use Cases

This drill press excels in environments where accuracy and consistency outweigh raw power demands. Woodworkers engaged in cabinetry, furniture construction, or custom shelving will appreciate the laser-guided alignment when creating evenly spaced mounting points or aligning joints. The depth stop proves invaluable during production runs—such as drilling identical pilot holes for screws or dowels—ensuring every piece matches precisely. Its five-speed selector adapts seamlessly between maple, oak, MDF, and even mild steel, expanding utility beyond traditional woodworking into light metal fabrication or sign-making. For DIY homeowners tackling projects like installing floating shelves, building birdhouses, or crafting decorative panels, the DP9505-00 offers professional-grade features in a space-saving benchtop format. The included work light improves illumination in cluttered or poorly lit garages or basements, promoting safer handling and reducing visual strain during extended sessions. Though not designed for continuous industrial duty, it handles regular weekend projects with dependable results.

Important Notes

Several customer feedback points highlight the importance of proper setup and usage. Notably, reports of noticeable wobble during high-RPM or deep-hole drilling suggest that stability depends heavily on the surface it’s mounted on. To mitigate this, always secure the base to a solid workbench using appropriate clamps or bolts—never rely solely on friction or adhesive feet. Opinions on long-term durability and precision retention vary; while many value the ease of initial use and functional layout, others express reservations about component tightness and material rigidity after months of service. Regular maintenance, including cleaning debris from the table and lubricating moving parts as needed, helps preserve performance. The package typically includes the main drill press unit, laser module, work light, chuck key, depth gauge, and assembly hardware. However, contents may differ slightly by region, so inspect all components upon unboxing. Always consult the included manual for safety guidelines, including proper laser handling and electrical requirements.

Powerful and versatile for the price
I needed to drill over 300 7/16″ holes in steel and needed a drill press to do it. My application was probably more than this unit was designed for but it handled it pretty well, with a little patience. The laser cross hair was way more handy than I would have guessed, and was exact right out of the box. Others complained about the white LED light not being bright enough, and while I wouldn’t use it to illuminate a prison yard, it definitely helped reduce shadows. I would but this unit again and would recommend it. Lots of sturdy metal construction where it counts.

    Love it
Wish I had bought sooner. I don’t have the space or the money for a big ol’ Powermatic, this will have to do for now.Set up was easy. The table wanders all over during adjustment, so the laser is handy for lining that back up if for nothing else. Laser was way off when I got it, but nudging the little doohickey with my thumb brought it back. I get a touch of travel out of the chuck, it wobbles slightly left. Also, when I power down something in the motor sounds a playing card in your bike spokes. Those things would tick me off in 1600 dollar machine, for this price you have to expect a little funkiness I figure. If it blows up I’ll come back and update.Incidentally, the way I dial in the laser is to mount a bradpoint or forstner, poke a little hole in some clamped scrap wood and mess with the laser until it lines up. I have to do this every couple of weeks or so, it doesn’t wander too far.UPDATE a year later: The press still works great; the only thing I have noticed is that in addition to a slight wobble left, when I bring the press all the way down, the bit ticks off to the left about a 1/16 of an inch. This would be horrible for accuracy, but at that point the bit is usually buried in the piece and the hole keeps it in line. Also, I added the Rockler drill press table, which is meant for full size drill presses and doesn’t really work with this one, but I got it to fit with some diy adjustments. The down side is that the table blocks the use of the adjustment crank, so I have to use a wrench to adjust the table up or down. Also I can’t use the vacuum port. Other than that it’s a nice addition for repeat cuts.

    nice and budget friendly
i would not call this top quality, it doesn’t feel like the components are that beefy.. but it does the job and seems to drill through steel on the slowest setting with no problem… a bit of vibration until you make contact , then it drills true and does a decent job . good enough for a tinkerer like me… light and laser were spot on for me and assembly went smoothly. it’s also fairly quiet and smooth…. again aside from a slight wobble when free spinning .

High quality and lots of features at a good price
This is a well built, versatile bench-top drill press with a host of good features. I bought it for the size, motor HP, 1/2″ chuck, and laser alignment. It has five motor speeds which are selected by moving the drive belt to different pulleys. The laser alignment works perfectly. The table tilts up to 45 degrees, though you need a wrench to make adjustments. The table also swivels around the main post. When mine arrived, the plastic collar holding the drill depth stop was broken. I registered with Skil online (that gets you a three-year warranty) and called them to ask for the part. They sent it out right away, free of charge, and it arrived in less than a week.

    Great value
I knew going in this would get me by until my larger drill press was fixed. Overall this thing is built pretty good. Easy to assemble, packaged well.Mine had a little runout issue at first then I took the chuck out and reinstalled It got better . It’s not a precision machining drill, but pretty good for its size. I started with 1/4″ steel plate with a 1 1/2″ hole saw. It did rather well with cutting oil. “I honestly thought I’d burn the motor up right at the start. It didn’t. The belt slipped some on the plastic pulleys and the motor has some sort of cut out when it gets stuck. Worked pretty good. I then went onto 3/8″ aluminum plate with a 1-3/8” hole saw “not carbide tipped” and it did pretty good even with the galling. I’m hard on equipment and this little sucker did good for what it is.

Better than I expected it to be, and a steal for the price
I had been eyeballing this one for a while, because I wanted a little more power than the similarly priced WEN (also I kinda hate the orange color scheme, but that’s not really a reason to purchase one over another)Reading the reviews, you’d think this thing were a wobbly piece of plastic slapped together by underpaid monkeys. Either I got lucky, or a lot of the other reviews are simply a matter of user error. Putting it together took me about 30 minutes, intentionally going slow so as not to make a mistake. I would have liked a more robust center column, and the worm drive rack can be a little finicky until you lock it down correctly (the instructions on this part I didn’t find sufficient)The laser was dead on perfect out of the box. I haven’t used it in anything but daylight so I can’t be sure how helpful the light is yet. I didn’t have the bolts to lock it down to my bench yet, but I experience no wobble whatsoever, it’s as perfectly balanced as any drill press I’ve used in the past. I’ll probably try to get a replacement chuck because the one that comes with it isn’t ideal, but there’s nothing terribly wrong with it, either. To anyone considering buying one, I’d just say, the collar that holds the rack against the center column — you want it to be able to glide in an arc around the column but it shouldn’t move up or down. Also, even though the rack comes out of the box attached to the column, when attaching the support base you’ll want to remove it and run it through the support base and *then* slide it onto the column. That was the only headache I experienced in the process, and it’s not even a case of the instructions being unclear, just a tad ambiguous. My use case will be primarily working with wood, but a bit of metal here and there, and it seems more than adequate for those jobs. Should something go horribly wrong, I’ll update my review.
