Benefits & Use Cases

The Smeg DCF02 is engineered for those who appreciate thoughtful design and practical innovation. Its auto-start capability is particularly valuable for individuals with tight schedules, allowing precise scheduling so coffee is ready precisely when needed—whether that’s right as you wake up or while you’re getting dressed. The adjustable water hardness feature empowers users to fine-tune their brew depending on local water composition, resulting in cleaner, more balanced flavors over time. For households where consumption varies daily, the 1–4 cup option offers flexibility, preventing waste and saving money. The silent mode is a thoughtful touch for light sleepers or shared living spaces, while the digital clock and LED panel ensure easy navigation even in low light.

Beyond functionality, the retro-inspired cream finish adds warmth and personality to modern kitchens. It pairs beautifully with other Smeg appliances, creating a unified look that feels curated rather than assembled. This makes the DCF02 not only a tool for making coffee but also a decorative element that enhances the overall ambiance of the space. Whether placed on a countertop or tucked beside other vintage-style gadgets, it contributes to a cheerful, timeless kitchen environment.

Additionally, the inclusion of a reusable filter supports eco-conscious habits by reducing disposable paper waste. Combined with energy-efficient operation and durable construction (aside from noted concerns about the glass carafe), the machine promotes sustainability without compromising on performance. The de-scaling alert further extends the lifespan of internal components, supporting consistent quality and reducing maintenance needs.

Important Notes

While the Smeg DCF02 offers numerous advanced features and a stylish design, potential buyers should be aware of reported concerns regarding the fragility of the included glass carafe. Users have noted that the carafe may break if dropped or mishandled, so careful handling is recommended. Although the machine itself appears robust, the glass component requires extra attention during cleaning and transport.

No specific warranty details were provided in the source material, and no official care instructions accompany the product. Customers are advised to consult the original packaging and user manual for proper usage guidelines. When purchasing, ensure all accessories listed (such as the carafe lid and filter) are present and intact. While Smeg emphasizes quality and design, real-world feedback indicates that long-term durability—particularly concerning the glass carafe—may vary between units.

Despite these considerations, the DCF02 remains a compelling choice for those seeking a visually striking, feature-rich coffee maker that aligns with a retro-modern lifestyle. Its combination of customization, convenience, and aesthetic appeal makes it suitable for both everyday use and entertaining guests who appreciate well-prepared coffee with character.

Gorgeous, great coffee, a bit quirky, LOVE my SMEG!!
Let me just tell you, I LOVE the SMEG. Yes it’s expensive, yes it’s a bit fussy, but as an avid coffee fan, I love it because it makes the best and hottest cup of drip coffee I’ve ever had at home.I can use the exact same kind of ground coffee in 3 different drip machines and the taste out of the SMEG is by far superior. It takes awhile to brew a pot (8-10 min) but it is worth the wait!!Pros: superior flavor/quality of brew, gorgeous on my counter. These two pros far outweigh the consCons:-not intuitive to operate, read the manual! Some commands (like setting auto brew) require hitting two buttons at once-Wants me to run a lengthy water descaling cycle every couple weeks—I’ve started to ignore this but I have to look at a red flashing light…-handle on pot does not feel very solid. I’m worried it could break off with a heavy pot of coffee…-keep warm plate only stays on an hour. I need at least two hours, so I end up powering off and back on to reset the timer. Not a deal breaker but annoying. And despite the cons, I love my SMEG and would recommend it. Hopefully they can address a few of these items in a subsequent model. Buy it and enjoy!

    Gorgeous and talented!
I love this coffee maker. It makes me happy every time I walk into the kitchen and see it. It’s easy to use, makes great coffee and programmable. The carafe does not drip when pouring and you can get all of the liquid out of it easily.I wanted this a couple years ago but read some negative reviews and with a Braun, it had a touch screen was about the same price and SUCKED! The touch screen never worked properly and finally stopped altogether recently despite excellent reviews.Someone mentioned this doesn’t have brew pause, that is incorrect. It does, it’s automatic just pull the pot out and drip stops. And beat if all- actual buttons no stupid touch screen. If you’ve been dreaming of this beauty, I say go for it you won’t be sorry!

    UPDATED: Disappointing
UPDATED REVIEW: I loved everything about this machine (except the flimsy carafe) but am disappointed that it stopped working out of nowhere in under two years of use. I faithfully descaled and cleaned it and then one day I turned on the machine and…nothing. Everything turns on but the pump doesn’t start. I have had pumps fail before but you can usually hear it before it ultimately fails and this gave no warning whatsoever. I also had to order a new carafe for it because of the cheap construction of the handle (which you can feel about to break when you brew more than a half carafe of coffee).I am so tired of buying coffee makers that last less than a year or 2. This machine has basic functionality and seemed solidly built and given the price of it, I feel like it should have had a longer lifespan…and a solid carafe. I finally gave up and purchased a $50 Krups which basically has the same functionality, a much more solid carafe, and is so inexpensive that at least I won’t feel as bad if it doesn’t last more than a year. It’s too bad because the Smeg did brew a nice cup of coffee and was like a piece of art on the counter but none of that is worth the price tag when it lasts less than two years.ORIGINAL REVIEW: I love a good cup of coffee, and with the pandemic causing me to stay at home most of the time, it became even more important to be able to make a delicious brew at home. After my last two Cuisinart coffee machines fizzled out in just over a year in one instance, and in 8 months in another, I embarked on a search for a better coffee maker. One not made by Cuisinart. I had my eye on the Smeg because, well, it’s a gorgeous machine. Since the appliance sits out on my counter 24/7, that is not a small consideration. It is like having a work of art on your countertop. I got the stainless steel model and it is a thing of beauty. I think I would have liked the white too, but that color is apparently exclusive to Williams Sonoma, and my local store did not have it in stock, and I needed this thing asap because the two days I spent not being able to make coffee at home were already two too many. Now to the most important question…does it brew a good cup of coffee? Oh my, it does. I cannot believe the difference between the cup this machine brewed and the one my old Cuisinart brewed, using the exact same coffee. The Smeg brewed coffee is so much smoother. I set the Aroma setting on the higher level, and it makes a huge difference in extracting the flavor of the coffee, although it does extend the brew time a bit. I use less coffee in this machine and get fuller flavor with no bitterness. The Smeg comes with a permanent filter, so you don’t need to use a paper filter, but I am a fan of Illy coffee, which is very finely ground, so I use a #4 filter in the machine (as I have in other filterless machines) because it simply makes clean up a lot easier. I rinse the paper filter before putting it in to eliminate any paper taste transferring the coffee. Now let’s address some of the criticisms in other reviews. Yes, it is true that the angle of the lid and the placement of the water reservoir makes it difficult to get the carafe angled perfectly to extract every last drop of water if you fill it with the carafe. Who cares? I simply use a water bottle to fill mine and it works perfectly. My old Cuisinart machines had the same issue.Warming time – yes, it is only 60 minutes, which is an issue for some people who like to brew a big pot and keep it warming all morning. You can always hit brew again when the machine turns off and the plate will warm again for 60 min, but really, all you are doing is making your coffee more bitter by leaving it on the plate for so long. Brew as much as you will drink in an hour, and then brew more if you want it. Your taste buds will thank you.Loudness of beeping – maybe people have much more sensitive ears than I do, but I didn’t find that the Smeg’s sounds were any louder than any other coffee machine I have used. Apparently, you can adjust the sound level in one of the settings, but I haven’t used this setting, because frankly the default is fine for me.Complicated instructions – no, I did not find this to be true, unless 5 minutes of reading is complicated, because that is the time it took me to set this baby up. Yes, some of the settings require you to press two buttons at the same time, and the clock, horror of horrors, requires you to use the lever on the side to set the time. I actually found this slightly easier than having to press a button multiple times like you do on most other coffee makers, but at the end of the day, if this really bothers you, you don’t have to set the clock terribly often anyway.Flimsy carafe handle – yes, the handle on the carafe seems a bit weak. Given the sturdiness of the machine itself it seems a bit odd that the carafe seems very cheap. I would definitely not put it in the dishwasher and I can see how the carafe handle could break after some use. Smeg should really address this. The cost of the replacement carafe is ridiculous given its flimsiness. This is a definite negative given the cost of the machine. In summary, this coffee maker looks stunning in your kitchen, brews a delicious cup of coffee, and is easy to use. It is more expensive than most other coffee makers with similar functions, which are fairly basic. If you need lots of bells and whistles, this machine is not for you. I just want a simple cup of coffee. I do think the Aroma setting is great and makes a big difference in the brew. I purchased an electric milk frother a few months ago and the use of it along with this coffee maker has really upped my home coffee game. Love it.

    Coffee maker
I get a lot of compliments on this coffee maker. It makes good hot coffee but it’s hard putting the water into the machine without spilling it all over. Don’t like that part of the design of this. Overall it makes good hot coffee. Easy to clean. Shuts off on its own. A little pricy tho. But I love it!

The luxury car of coffee makers
So we buy nice cars knowing that they are expensive…yet they still just take us from place to place, but in style. The SMEG is like a luxury car. It reminds me of when I had the 50th anniversary Camaro and then traded it in for an Equinox. Now I still don’t regret the decision because my insurance was going up and it was Covid times lol…but I am keeping the SMEG because it really is luxurious. I bought a cheaper coffee maker to compare, and SMEG really does make better coffee. It has its faults…it’s not searing hot like I prefer, but I did taste test comparisons and the brew really is richer. I love the design and the classiness of it, and setting the timer is really simple. It makes me happy just looking at it. Plus the color is cheerful and there are many color options. Overall I think it’s a lovely product.

Power button requires abnormally long pressing time
Some design abnormalities in this machine include:1. The power button requires pressing for nearly 20 seconds to turn the machine on.2. The top lid does not open wide enough to pour the last bit of water out of the coffee pot into the well. Since the lid restricts how far the top of the coffeepot can tip towards the rear of the machine, a small amount of fresh water will remain in the pot.3. The lever and knob switch on the side is a functional selector; it’s not a power button.4. The coffee pot lip and plastic lid are formed so that any attempt to pour the coffee quickly at a steep angle will result in a spill.5. The coffee amount markings seem to be abnormally conservative. These may be 6oz cup markings.Other than these quirks, the machine performs well and makes coffee as one expects.

Our daughter has one we liked the look of it so we thought we would give it a try. Love the look of it and the colour. Goes with our new kitchen. As for making coffee. So far, it works perfectly and makes great coffee. Easy to use. Actually read the instructions first for once.
