The Persian Carpet Man, ‘Tajir’, was Leonard Flinn (1882-1971), who made six extended trips to Iran between 1903 and 1944 in connection with his employment with Ziegler & Co., a successful Manchester-based business which commissioned carpets for weaving in remote Iranian villages and shipped them from the Gulf for sale in Europe and the USA. In the course of his travels, mostly on horseback across arid landscapes and mountain ranges, Tajir covered over 15,000 miles across much of eastern Iran. This book draws on Tajir’s letters, diaries and photographs, and forms a valuable record of travel, commerce and everyday life in Iran in the first half of the last century.
