Product Overview

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is a next-generation smart home device engineered to deliver intelligent automation through precise motion detection and ambient light sensing. Built on the open Matter standard and powered by Thread protocol technology, this sensor ensures reliable, low-latency communication and seamless interoperability across major platforms. Whether you’re building or upgrading a smart home ecosystem with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings, the P2 integrates effortlessly—provided you have the right gateway infrastructure in place.

Unlike traditional sensors that rely solely on cloud-based processing, the P2 supports local automation via Matter, meaning your routines can trigger instantly without depending on internet connectivity. This not only enhances response speed but also improves privacy and system reliability. The dual-function design allows it to independently monitor both movement and lighting conditions, enabling more nuanced automations such as dimming lights only when motion occurs in darkness or adjusting window coverings based on both presence and daylight levels.

Key Features

  • Native Matter Support: Designed from the ground up for the Matter smart home standard, the P2 delivers plug-and-play compatibility across brands and platforms. This eliminates the common fragmentation found in older ecosystems and ensures consistent performance whether you’re using Apple HomeKit, Alexa routines, or SmartThings automations.
  • Thread Protocol Integration: By leveraging Thread—a secure, low-power mesh networking protocol—the sensor maintains stable connections even in larger homes. Its inclusion in a Thread network extends coverage through repeaters (other Thread devices), reduces signal interference, and minimizes battery drain over time.
  • Independent Dual Sensing: Beyond detecting motion, the P2 features a dedicated light sensor that operates separately from its PIR motion detector. This enables distinct automation rules: for example, closing blinds during daylight hours when someone walks by, while simultaneously turning on hallway lights only at night when motion is detected and it’s dark outside.
  • High-Performance Detection: With a wide 170-degree field of view and a maximum detection range of up to 7 meters (about 23 feet), the sensor captures activity across expansive areas like open-plan living rooms, long hallways, or large entryways. Its advanced hardware reliably identifies subtle movements, reducing false triggers from pets or environmental factors.
  • Flexible Installation: Included with the sensor is an adjustable mounting stand that supports wall, ceiling, or horizontal placement. This versatility lets you optimize coverage based on room layout—ideal for corner placements, under shelves, or above doorways where optimal sensing is needed without compromising aesthetics.
  • Local Automation Capabilities: Thanks to Matter’s architecture, many automations run locally on your home network instead of routing through the cloud. This means faster response times, greater resilience during internet outages, and improved data privacy since sensitive triggers never leave your premises.

Benefits & Use Cases

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 excels in environments where intelligent, context-aware automation enhances comfort, security, and energy efficiency. In bedrooms, it can automatically turn on nightlights when someone enters after sunset or close curtains during the day if motion suggests unwanted sunlight. In hallways or stairwells, it prevents unnecessary lighting by activating only when needed and only when it’s dark—reducing energy waste and extending bulb life.

For outdoor applications like porch or driveway lighting, the P2 enables smart activation exclusively during nighttime hours, ensuring safety without constant illumination. Its dual-sensor design also makes it ideal for home theaters or media rooms, where subtle ambient lighting adjustments are preferred based on both occupancy and available natural light. Because it supports local automation, these routines remain functional even if your Wi-Fi goes down—a critical advantage over cloud-dependent alternatives.

Whether you’re expanding an existing Matter-compatible hub setup or integrating into a new ecosystem, the P2 adds valuable intelligence with minimal configuration. Once paired via your chosen app and connected to a Thread network through a compatible router, the sensor begins delivering reliable performance immediately.

Important Notes

Requires Compatible Gateway: The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 cannot function standalone. To join a Matter-over-Thread network, you must have a 2-in-1 Matter Controller & Thread Border Router. This device acts as the bridge between the Thread network and your home’s IP network, enabling communication with other smart devices via apps like Apple Home, Alexa, or SmartThings. Without this router, the sensor will not connect or operate.

Before purchasing, verify that your current smart home hub or router supports both Matter and Thread protocols. Many newer routers from Eero, Google Nest, or third-party Matter-certified models already include this functionality. If your setup doesn’t yet support Matter, consider upgrading your gateway first to fully utilize the P2’s capabilities.

No additional mounting hardware is included beyond the built-in adjustable stand, so ensure your intended installation surface can securely hold the unit. Standard pairing procedures apply once powered on—simply follow the instructions within your preferred Matter-enabled app to complete setup. Firmware updates may be delivered automatically through the app, keeping your sensor optimized over time.

The sensor’s battery life depends on usage patterns and reporting frequency, but Thread’s low-power design helps maximize longevity. When replacement is needed, consult Aqara documentation for compatible battery types.

    Nice Matter/Thread Motion Sensor
Overall, this is a neat little motion sensor that runs by Matter over Thread. It is exposed to various platforms as “occupancy” rather than motion not due to failings on the sensors part, but rather as the current limitations of the developing Matter Standard. Also, exposed to various platforms is the light/illuminance sensor. All in all, it functions exactly as you would expect for a motion sensor to work. If there is motion, it gets triggered. Light levels only update as motion is triggered, not a constant update; I would imagine otherwise battery brain would be obscene.(Important to note is: You do need to have a functional thread network set up for this device to work, as that’s the communication protocol of the device)Visually, it’s a nice looking sensor. Small, solid feeling plastic casing, feels and looks niceTo pair, you can either scan the QR code provided on the booklet that’s enclosed, but if you lose that or your QR camera is not working, the booklet provides the numbers to input. ***As well as this the Matter Code is printed on the top of the sensor it is associated with.*** Nicely discrete but accessible, should the page of the booklet be misplaced. The batteries are 2 (two) CR2450 coin batteries. As this is a brand new sensor, battery life is still to be determined, but even so it’s not something I’m too worried about. Even the “lower” estimate of two years depending on usage is nothing to sneeze at. I’d be more concerned if it was only estimated to last a few months. The only thing I’m not too pleased with is the inability to adjust distance/level parameters of the sensor without the, at time of writing, unreleased Aqara M3 Hub

    Not reliable
I bought one in Jan 2025. Set it up with HomeKit and used it in my garage for a few weeks to detect motion to turn the garage light on / off (with a Tapo light switch). The P2 stopped working after a few weeks, dead and non-responsive. So I contacted Aqara support and they sent me a replacement. I think it is a refurbished one (box was opened, the top the device does not have the Matter # on it like the original P2 I purchased). I’ve been unsuccessful in connecting the replacement. After going through the first steps it sits forever in the “connecting…” phase. I tried 30 different times, with two different iPhones (13 and 14, both running 18.3.1), same issue. I’m going to try and Onvis or Eve motion detector and see if I have better luck.I should note that I have an Aqara M2 hub and a Aqara P1 Motion Sensor used in combination with an Aqara light switch and Aqara smart plug in my utility room which works flawlessly (turns lights on/off). I also have a dozen Aqara leak detectors in my house.

Great product! Will be purchasing more
This has been a great and easy to use product. I purchased it for motion activation with my smart lights but quickly learned it is capable of so much more. It has an ambient light sensor which is great for triggering lights to turn on if it’s a gloomy day or keep them off if it’s still bright. It also has been able to work with my smart blinds if the sun is beaming in it can trigger them to close. Best part is the product is small, well made and wireless so it can be placed anywhere. Great job Aqara!

Works with SmartThings v3 hub but documentation is terrible
Update: Prior to posting this review, I messaged Aqara directly regarding the difficulty I was having. Although I had found the solution (below) before hearing back from them, I had discovered that the battery level on the Aqara device was reporting only 50% battery remaining. Aqara made a reasonable effort to help me and offered me some compensation for my troubles, so I have been impressed with their response. Therefore, I will be purchasing another device from them in the not-too-distant future and hope to have a better setup experience. I am also going to raise my rating from 3 to 4 stars.Setting up the Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 was a major pain until I figured out how to get it to successfully complete the initial setup process. This was my first Matter-over-Thread device, so some of the confusion was due to my learning curve, but there are a couple points that are worth noting. In my case, I wanted to connect the P2 device via my SmartThings v3 hub, which is both a Matter Controller and a Thread Border Router. As soon as you put the P2 device into Pairing mode and open the SmartThings app (I’m using iOS), the app prompts you to add the device. in my case, this NEVER worked. Do this instead:When prompted to add the device, cancel that setup wizard. While still in the SmartThings app, tap the + button and choose “Add device”.Next to “Partner devices,” tap Add.Find and tap Aqara.Tap “Motion sensor”Tap “Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2”.At this point, the SmartThings app may download some additional software, which I suspect is why the auto-setup wizard fails. When prompted, scan the P2’s QR code.Next, allow the app to add the device to iCloud.I have both Alexa and Home Assistant connected to SmartThings, so both of these systems found the Aqara P2 device and were functional, though it does appear that the Alexa app cannot interact with the light sensor. Only the motion sensor appears to work in Alexa. The SmartThings app and Home Assistant, however, sees both sensors just fine.

I’m into my smart home and recently started doing more with automation. This motion sensor is great and it detects motion and lux light levels that allowed me to create an automation to turn on my lights if it detects motion and the light lux level is at a certain measure. Easy to use and set up with the Aqara ecosystem and the price is good for what it does. Very happy with This product

El sensor es más pequeño de lo que parece, detecta luz y movimiento y se puede integrar con HomeKit. Costó un poco que lo identificara pero al final lo conseguí. Buen precio durante Black Friday

was doubtful after reading some bad reviews here, but this sensor is excellent. easily connected to HomeKit and has a very useful light sensor. would have been nice if the sensitivity could be adjusted, but overall its responsive and seems to have a reasonable 30 sec or so cooldown period before it triggers again. its connecting at a fair distance to hub so the signal is better than expected.
