Product Overview
The August Home Smart Lock, 3rd Generation in Silver, transforms your existing deadbolt into a connected, intelligent entry system—without altering the exterior of your door. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, the August Smart Lock offers keyless access via smartphone or Apple Watch, giving you full control over who enters your space—and when.
Powered by Bluetooth Smart technology (v4.0), the lock communicates directly with your mobile device through the free August app, enabling instant locking and unlocking from anywhere within Bluetooth range. For added flexibility, the lock includes a physical key backup for emergencies, ensuring you’re never locked out due to battery failure or connectivity issues. With features like auto-lock, auto-unlock, and real-time door status alerts, the August Smart Lock streamlines daily routines while maintaining strong security standards.
Key Features
- Keyless Entry via Smartphone or Apple Watch: Unlock and lock your door instantly using the August app on your compatible iPhone or Apple Watch—no more searching for keys when your hands are full or pockets empty.
- Auto-Unlock as You Arrive: The lock detects your approach and automatically unlocks when you’re near home, offering hands-free convenience ideal for carrying groceries, strollers, or managing children.
- Auto-Lock with DoorSense Technology: Once your door is closed, the lock secures itself automatically. DoorSense monitors whether the door is fully shut and locked, sending real-time alerts through the app if it isn’t—giving you peace of mind whether you’re at home or away.
- Bluetooth Smart Connectivity: Operates using Bluetooth Specification v4.0 (Bluetooth Smart), providing reliable short-range communication with your smartphone or Apple Watch for secure, responsive control.
- Renter-Friendly & Non-Permanent: Ideal for apartment dwellers, the lock installs easily on most standard single-cylinder deadbolts. When you move, simply remove the August lock and reinstall the original thumbturn—leaving no permanent modifications behind.
- Simple DIY Installation: No advanced tools or expertise required. Most users install the lock in about 10 minutes using the included hardware and step-by-step app-guided instructions.

Benefits & Use Cases
The August Smart Lock is perfect for anyone looking to modernize their home security without major renovations. If you often return home carrying packages, groceries, or small children, the auto-unlock feature eliminates the need to fumble with keys or dig for your phone. The auto-lock function ensures your door is always secured after you leave, reducing the risk of accidentally leaving it open. This is especially valuable for busy households or frequent travelers who want consistent security.
For renters and shared living spaces, the August Smart Lock offers a practical upgrade. Its removable design means you can take it with you when moving, restoring your door to its original state by reattaching the thumbturn. Landlords and property managers also appreciate the ability to grant temporary digital access to guests, service providers, or tenants—without needing to hand over physical keys. The August app logs every lock and unlock event, so you can monitor who accessed your home and when.
While the lock works reliably within Bluetooth range (typically up to 50–100 feet indoors), remote access outside that range requires the optional August Connect accessory (sold separately), which adds Wi-Fi connectivity. Without it, you’ll need to be nearby to use the app or Apple Watch to control the lock.
Important Notes
To use the August Smart Lock, you’ll need a compatible smartphone running iOS 12.2 or later or Android 6.0 or later with Bluetooth enabled. The free August app must be installed and paired with the lock during setup. Always keep your mobile device charged, as a dead phone could prevent access during an outage. The lock includes a backup key, but relying solely on digital access without a physical alternative may pose risks in emergencies.
Not all door types or existing locks are compatible. Before purchasing, confirm that your door uses a standard single-cylinder deadbolt and that the interior mechanism allows for replacement with the August lock. If you’re unsure, consult the compatibility guide in the product documentation or contact customer support.
This smart lock does not include built-in Wi-Fi, so remote access beyond Bluetooth range requires the August Connect bridge. The lock is powered by a replaceable CR123A lithium battery, which typically lasts several months under normal use. Low-battery alerts will notify you through the app before power runs out.
By choosing the August Home Smart Lock, 3rd Generation, you gain a blend of convenience, security, and flexibility—all while keeping your door’s traditional look intact. Whether you’re upgrading your primary residence or enhancing an apartment rental, this smart lock delivers a seamless, user-friendly experience backed by one of the most trusted names in smart home security.

Designed so people aren’t confused on how to unlock it
I finally upgraded from the original first gen round August Lock (which I’ve been happy with your several years now) to this third gen version. The biggest reason I wanted to upgrade was the fact that the design of this one is like a regular lock. While the round one was working just fine, unfortunately other people unfamiliar with the lock just became baffled on how to unlock the door from the inside. With the design of this one, that eliminates that confusion for guests and it looks like a normal door lock to them. The additional features I like compared to the first gen one was the addition of the door sense feature. I haven’t experienced it enough yet to really comment on it, but the initial testing of it was nice to prevent it from trying to lock when the door was still open. The issue I did have on the first gen one was that it could sometimes jam the lock if it tried to lock when not fully latched or closed. This one so far also seems to be a lot better with the smart alert notifications. The first gen one was hit or miss when notifications would actually work with the wifi hub. But so far this new one seems to actually notify every time per my settings. The only negative thing I have about the third gen vs the first gen is the missing sounds. On the first gen one, you could have it make lock and unlock sounds when used by the app or auto lock/unlock. Unfortunately the 3rd gen doesn’t have the sounds built in. It is louder when the device is working, which somewhat substitutes for that so you can hear it working, but I’d still rather have the lock and unlock sounds option.Outside of that flaw, it is still a great product. If you are a renter, it is also perfect as the original keyed entry doesn’t change, and you still only swap the inside part, and when you move out, you simply put the original inside piece back. That’s why I preferred August Lock from anything else. It is simple, yet effective. Now I have a spare first gen one, maybe I’ll just use it for the back door.

Perfect solution if you want an easy set up
We have a rather unusual door with the knob quite far from the doorjamb. Hence you need an extra long bolt and none of the keypad locks had that option. This one allowed us to work with the existing lock and it is just so easy to set up. We didn’t opt for the wifi set up and haven’t needed it. Love having the ability to create a new code for someone and then delete it when needed. Like others, the auto unlock only works about half the time, but when it does it is awesome, especially when your hands are full coming home.

Lasted 6 Years
I loved this Smart Lock so much that when it finally gave up the ghost 6 years almost to the month after purchase and install, I bought the exact same lock to replace it. This thing withstood two teenage, then young adult boys and my husband who constantly goes in and out of the house. It was locked and unlocked probably millions of times before it failed. The battery life has been great. I appreciated the alerts that someone left the door open on a couple of occasions. I also love the auto lock and unlock features and using it with Alexa. I was surprised my first one lasted 6 years, and I’m looking forward to another 6 years with the new one. I tried to troubleshoot the one that failed, but I really think old age got to it. It started telling me the door was locked when it wasn’t, and it made a terrible slow grinding sound when I could get it to lock and unlock with the app. I tried different batteries thinking it was a power issue. I tried recalibration of DoorSense. It was like the old lock succumbed to dementia. That’s ok. It had a good, long life.

Competitive field
I’m not unhappy with this purchase, but I’m not especially thrilled either, given the price point. This August lock will work without a Wi-Fi Hub if you only want to connect with it when you’re at home or are outside the door, and that can save you some expense. Buying the August Hub is not cheap.I’ve heard that August is extremely reliable and well-regarded so I wanted to give their Smart Lock a try, but I think that Wyze and SwitchBot, especially SwitchBot, might be a better value. Competitors like these have stepped up their game.I purchased the August keypad separately, and really like the modern design and red backlight. It’s cool. However SwitchBot Lock Pro includes all the components – lock, hub, and keypad, even NFC access, at a significantly lower overall price. The indoor box that sits on the interior part of your door is heavy and bulky. It is very well secured by two lift levers but it still makes me a little uneasy as to how heavy this product is. I think all of the smart locks, except for Level, have this problem.Installation was quite easy, mostly because I’ve done this before with other brands. Although I didn’t think the app was perfectly intuitive, I’m used to it now, and pleased.

This is my second August lock. I bought my parents a Kevo two years ago after reading the wirecutter’s review calling it the best. It was not great. Installation wasn’t difficult, but not simple. Probably 20min total. The app is not user friendly. The tap to unlock often took multiple tries and just using the app directly was painfully slow.I bought myself an August last year and the difference is night and day. Installation was 3min maximum. The app is clean with a great UX. Unlocking with the widget from my lock screen is faster than the Kevo ever was. This year I grabbed another one to replace the Kevo at my parents’. It’s been installed for 3 days and my mom has already called me to thank me and say how much better it is.I obviously haven’t tested every smart lock out there, but if The Wirecutter’s pick of Kevo is supposed to be the best and this is better, I don’t know see how anything else could beat it.

Amazon or the August product descriptions never pointed out the fact that the August skill is not available for Alexa outside of US. Now my purchase of two August products worth hundreds of pounds is not even half as useful as I thought they would be. Stay away from this if you are not in US.
